We're thrilled to invite you to our VIP event to celebrate Loy Krathong on Monday 27th November, one of the most picturesque and prominent events in Thailand, at Thaikhun Cambridge overlooking the stunningly scenic River Cam.

Loy Krathong is a beautiful festival where people gather to celebrate by floating a 'Krathong' - a decorated basket - on a river. It is a time to pay respects to the goddess of water, while floating away any negativity, and making a wish for the future.

The event promises a unique cultural experience in the heart of Cambridge:

FAQs

A Buddhist monk blessing involves a ritual where the monk, as a spiritual authority, imparts positive energy, good wishes, and protection through chanting, prayers, and holy water. Its significance lies in establishing a spiritual connection, bringing positive energy, offering protection, and maintaining cultural traditions.

A krathong is a decorative floating object traditionally made from banana leaves, flowers, candles, and incense. It is a cultural tradition in Thailand and other parts of Southeast Asia, particularly during the festival known as Loy Krathong. The festival is usually held on the full moon night of the twelfth lunar month, which this year falls on the date of this event - Monday 27th November!

Loy Krathong, the captivating Thai festival, is a vibrant blend of culture, spirituality, and breathtaking beauty. As communities come together along moonlit rivers and lakes, there's a strong sense of unity and shared heritage in the air. Crafting intricate krathongs from banana leaves and blossoms, each a unique display of creativity, people gather to release these small vessels onto the water. The flickering candles and fragrant incense on the floating creations create a magical sight, turning the water into a dreamy scene. With the gentle sound of water and the communal buzz of celebration, Loy Krathong represents a collective letting go—a shedding of burdens, a spiritual dance, and a heartfelt renewal that goes beyond borders. As each illuminated krathong sends wishes onto the water's surface, the festival tells a powerful story of environmental awareness, cultural pride, and a shared human desire for peace and positivity. Loy Krathong is more than just an event; it's a heartfelt tribute to Thai traditions, a meaningful connection with nature, and an irresistible invitation for both locals and global explorers to immerse themselves in a radiant celebration of life.

Releasing krathongs into the river during Loy Krathong serves various symbolic, spiritual, and cultural purposes:

  1. Letting Go of Negativity: Floating krathongs symbolizes releasing negativity, grudges, and bad luck, offering a fresh start and promoting renewal and positivity.

  2. Paying Respect to Water Spirits: Loy Krathong involves homage to water spirits and the goddess of water, Phra Mae Khongkha. Floating krathongs expresses gratitude and seeks blessings for good fortune and well-being.

  3. Expressing Wishes and Prayers: Candles, incense, and personal offerings on krathongs carry wishes and prayers as they drift away, serving as a ritual to communicate with the divine and seek blessings.

  4. Cultural Tradition: Releasing krathongs is a deeply ingrained Thai cultural tradition, connecting communities with their rich cultural heritage and fostering collective celebration during Loy Krathong.

  5. Harmony with Nature: Celebrated during the November full moon, Loy Krathong expresses gratitude to water as a precious resource and acknowledges the harmony between people and nature.

  6. Aesthetic and Spiritual Experience: The visual beauty of illuminated krathongs on the water enhances the festival's enchanting atmosphere, creating a serene and magical scene through flickering candles and fragrant incense.
